TOPICOptimising Logistics: From Campervans to CoalOptimally fulfilling customers' rental requests for recreational vehicles (motor homes, campervans and four-wheel drives) requires fleet-wide decisions on vehicle relocations, substitutions (upgrades) and other alternatives. In the first part of this talk, we describe methods for solving such transport optimisation problems, and discuss how CSIRO's methods are now used 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by two of the largest recreational vehicle rental companies in Australia. We will then consider bulk material supply chains, and examine a set of decision support tools that CSIRO has developed for the Hunter Valley Coal Chain Logistics Team (HVCCLT). The tools assist HVCCLT in making decisions and recommendations in areas such as rail scheduling, investments in new rail and port capacity, and changes in supply chain operating policy.
